How Big is Big Data ?

  • Era of 300 BC – 48 AD:

Alexandria: The world’s largest data storage centre.

Consists of 180,000 books,

Total size of 20 GB.

  • 1663: The first recorded statistical analysis experiments conducted by John Graunt

Attempt to curb the spread of the bubonic plague in Europe .

  • 1881: One of the founders of IBM Herman Hollerith creates the Hollerith Tabulating Machine

Uses punch cards to vastly reduce the workload of the US Census

  • 1926.: Nikola Tesla predicts: In future, a man will be able to access and analyse vast amounts of data using a device small enough to fit in his pocket
  • 1965.: The US Government plans the world’s first data centre to store 742 million tax returns and 175 million sets of fingerprints on magnetic tape

In technical terms Big Data can be best described with its 4 V’s, which are

1. Volume 2. Velocity 3. Variety. 4. Veracity

  1. Volume: Sheer size of data in terms of storage and access.
  2. Velocity: Speed of incoming data and the time it takes to process it.
  3.  Variety: Type of files and formats of data as well as sources. (Structured, Unstructured, Semi structured)
  4. Veracity: Uncertainty of data.

The digital world is a prime example of how BIG is the opportunity for Big Data to be used by organisations with the amount of data available on these platforms

Facebook: Number of Facebook Login EVERYDAY – 2.6 Billion

Netflix: It provides 140 million hours of content per day.

E-Mail- Number of emails sent per day is around 205 billion.

This equals to almost 2.4 million emails are sent every second

and some 74 trillion emails are sent per year.

Uber: Uber announced one million rides worldwide in December 2014. As of July 2016, Uber was completing an average of 5.5 million rides a day. Last week, Uber hit 5 billion total completed trips. So, one million rides a day is cool for Lyft, but it’s still nowhere near the number of rides Uber completes on a daily basis.

Instagram: Per day about 95 million photos and videos are shared on Instagram.

Amazone: Amazon does 6,000 deals per minute.

Youtube: 1.3 billion hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute! Almost 5 billion videos are watched on You tube every single day.

These statistics clearly describes the rate of volume of data is tremendously increasing day by day and every organization is floating in the ocean of this Big Data.  It’s now up to the organizations to make use of this available volume of data, manage it and process it to get some valuable results while ensuring they are not misused and for the betterment of  the society too.
